VOCAL OSTEOPATHY

Vocal osteopathy is a highly specialised treatment approach which aims to assess and treat tension of the voice box and its associated musculature. It is for singers, actors, teachers, public speakers or anyone else who exerts their voice on a regular basis. It can also help people with voice or swallowing disorders, Muscle Tension Dysphonia, or post vocal surgery as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team.

During a session your posture and breathing may be assessed, as well as the muscles of the neck, jaw and throat. Gentle massage and stretching techniques can help to create balance and equilibrium - a good base for your vocal cords to work from. Delicate but profound articulation techniques of the larynx (the voice box) can restore optimal function with deep release of tension. Assessing the pelvis, spine, ribcage and shoulders will also allow us to address individual patterns of tension that may be affecting voice production.

Treatment is pleasant, with consideration for each individual's comfort level. The voice and throat may connect us to memories or feelings of emotional or physical experiences, and can generate a sense of vulnerability, so should be approached with care. I practice Trauma Informed Care - keeping safety, trust and empowerment at the forefront of every session.

Vocal massage and osteopathy can help to improve overall vocal apparatus function including loss of range and transition between vocal registers. Creating muscle balance and identifying compensations reduces the risk of vocal injury, stress and fatigue. Decreased tension can lead to greater trust in your voice, reducing performance anxiety. Improved posture makes healthy singing and speaking techniques easier to access, and can connect you with your body for a more confident presentation.
